"I, Joseph, my father Jacob's favourite son, am so overwhelmed with what has just happened to me... I still cannot believe it... But when I look around I know it is true... I have been thrown into a pit.... And by my own brothers... I have been begging them to take me out... But it seems they are completely ignoring me... I was so pleased when I finally found them here in the fields near Dothan... They noticed me as well... I was going to let them know how pleased I was to have found them... But I never had a chance... The moment I got near they grabbed me... They took off my richly ornamented robe... I told them to be please be careful with my coat... For our father had given it to me...But they just laughed.... And they told me I did not need it anymore... I did not understand what that meant...However, they then they threw me into this empty cistern... And they told me they would just leave me in it... What am I do to? I can only go on crying out to them for mercy... Perhaps they will take pity on me.... I am, after all, their brother."... PART V
Before Joseph reaches his brothers, who are grazing their flocks near Dotham they spot him. Anger towards their brother rises up withim them so they plot to get rid of him as you can read in Genesis 37:18-24
But they saw him in the distance, and before he reached them, they plotted to kill him. "Here comes that dreamer!" they said to each other."Come now, let's kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we'll see what comes of his dreams." When Reuben heard this, he tried to rescue them from their hands."Let's not take his life," he said, "Don't shed any blood. Throw him into this cistern here in the desert, but don't lay a hand on him." Reuben said this to rescue him from them and take him back to his father. So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe - the richly ornamented robe he was wearing - and they took him and threw him into the cistern. Now the cistern was emptly; there was no water in it.
The oldest brother Reuben does not want to have Joseph killed so he suggests that they throw him into an empty cistern, which is what they do. He then plans to take him out of that cistern later on.
